Got OCD? August 31, 2010 Kelly L. Stark (Midland, TX United States) Let's face it, DQ IX us massive. You've got to be a little obsessive-compulsive to want to finish all the side quests, complete your bestiary and alcheminicon, and acquire all the stuff to be found in this game. This book is an invaluable resource for doing just that. There are a few issues with the layout, and the binding should be better. Still, don't go questing without it!
Great Product August 21, 2010 Kevin T. Seven 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This product is fantastic if your going to play DQ9 definitely pick this up. It's super informative and helpful
Huge and Beautiful, Yet Flawed August 9, 2010 Steven Gargolinski (Boston) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The first thing you will notice about this guide is that it is HUGE. It comes it at around 450 pages, including hundreds of pages dedicated to the bestiary, weapons, armor, spells, etc. As a small child, I used to love flipping through Dragon Quest guides looking at all of the countless different treasures and monsters - and this guide has shown me that I still do! The art is beautiful, and it's pretty cool to just browse through all of the items and inhabitants that make up a Dragon Quest universe.
When it comes to the walkthrough section of the guide - it's ok. There are nice large maps, but the accompanying text is written in a stylized way that can sometimes make it different to follow along. One serious problem is that there's no checklist for Mini Medals, which is a major collectible in every Dragon Quest game - this is the type of thing you expect to see in a guide book, and it's very noticeably missing. [EDIT: Mini Medals drop from some monsters in DQIX (as pointed out in the comments)], which I hadn't experienced yet when writing the review, so a definitive checklist isn't quite as necessary as it was in previous games) If you're a real collector, you'll definitely still find yourself going to the internet for certain information - even with the guide in hand.
Lacks Essential Information a Guide Should Have August 9, 2010 Greg Webster (Austin, TX) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This guide has extensive walkthroughs and maps, but lacks several things that I find important to an RPG where item creation and treasure are important. It does not have any guide for item creation or tell you where you can find certain items. It does not tell you item drop rates or even what monsters are capable of dropping what items. Lastly, there is no guide to mini medals, an important collectible in the game that is often hard to find.
Not a Reference Book July 30, 2010 Flare576 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
This was mentioned by another reviewer, but I want to drive home the point: This book is organized very poorly.
In the appendixes for items it lists NOTHING about locations; it doesn't list towns to purchase from, it doesn't list monsters that drop the items, and it (as far as I can tell) isn't even sorted methodically (not alphabetical or by rarity and doesn't look grouped).
I've only briefly skimmed the walk-through part of the book for the purpose of finding out what towns I've been to sell the items I'm looking for, so I can't speak to the effectiveness of the walk-through, but as a "Hey, where do I find this..." the book is basically useless.
If you're looking for a specific monster, you'll have to flip through about 20 pages, because they aren't indexed or sorted by name; they do appear to be sorted by level, so if you're wondering what you'll be fighting "soon," that might be helpful.
By adding 10 more pages of alphabetized indexing and maybe 10 more pages for room for item information this book could have been a fantastic tool for the game. As it stands, I hope to find a good wiki site.
