Synopsis:

In a terrifying tale of the "American Dream" gone horribly wrong, residents of a picture-perfect Midwestern town begin to succumb to an uncontrollable urge for violence when a mysterious toxin in the water supply turns everyone exposed to it into mindless killers. Sheriff David Dutton (Timothy Olyphant of LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD); his pregnant wife, Judy (Radha Mitchell of SILENT HILL); Becca (Danielle Panabaker of FRIDAY THE 13th), an assistant at the medical center; and Russell (Joe Anderson of ACROSS THE UNIVERSE), Dutton's deputy and right-hand man, find themselves trapped in a once idyllic town they can no longer recognize. Unable to trust former neighbors and friends, deserted by the authorities and terrified of contracting the illness themselves, they are forced to band together in a nightmarish struggle for survival in this reinvention of the George Romero classic.

4 out of 5 stars Crazies=Scary   September 6, 2010

The Crazies is suspense, horror, action, and sci-fi all wrapped up in one excellently done movie. The residence of a small town begin going mad 1 by 1 and all hell breaks loose. The military moves in and they may be as bad if not worse than the crazies, it is up to the Sheriff and his Deputy to save the day,or are they going crazy too? If you like suspense and action/horror you will like the Crazies.

4 out of 5 stars smart , above average modern horror film   September 1, 2010

yes , i think we can all concede we've seen many variations on the old government crash screw up or viral release or what have you . there's always room for another entry in the genre providing it's pretty well done . the proof that this one is ? its current asking price and average customer rating . there are better films in this vein . the larger number of them are lesser than this though . into the wish list for me . fine , don't buy it . but check it out . you'll thank yourself for a nail biting good time when all is said and done . that's the modest goal . it's not Shakespeare . the rule of thumb with a lot of modern provocative film appears to be , if it's good , it divides people and settles around 3 and 1/2 out of 5 stars for a long time . A.K.A. buy it if you're so inclined (because you're correct) .

Make no mistake-"The Crazies" is a horror film. You may have read that it's really a modern remake of an old 1973 George Romero horror film by the same name. I haven't seen Romero's original, but this film is very well-done.
The biggest name in this film is Timothy Olyphant in the lead role as sheriff of small town Ogden Marsh, Iowa (population 1260). The rest of the cast and the director, Breck Eisner, are not quite as well-known, but they all do a very competent job. The acting and the directing are so well-coordinated that you never have the feeling the film is trying to "showcase" a particular actor, nor that the actors are ever competing with each other for attention. That, along with the pace of this film, which to me seemed just perfect (transitioning very gradually from casual to almost frenetic as things fall more & more apart) really allows the viewer to suspend disbelief and immerse yourself in the story. And there is plenty of story. There's plenty of scares too, but this film never loses sight of telling a story, focusing on a small group of people trying desperately to escape this town alive. They have not only the "crazies" to contend with but also the military (in classic Romero style, the government is no more trustworthy than the disease). The violence is just sufficient to maintain a real sense of suspense, without over-the-top or gratuitous gore.
The film is almost entirely first-person viewpoint, and along with the characters we learn that something is terribly wrong, people are going berserk and senselessly attacking others; that it apparently came from the cargo on a military plane that crashed in the marsh which supplies the town water; that it might have become airborn; that the military is rounding up and quarantining everyone; and finally, that nobody is going to be allowed to get out...
There are also plenty of head-fakes in which you don't know whether something awful is about to happen or not, but these too are done in a reasonably sophisticated way, not overly calling attention to themselves but just keeping you constantly on-edge and not knowing just what's coming next.
The blu-ray looks great and the musical score is good, particularly at the ending credits. There are a moderate number of "bonus features"; three short (10 minute) featurettes being the most interesting to me. This was really filmed in Iowa, as well as in rural Georgia (enabling filming to avoid the cold Iowa winters and the hot Georgia summers). The whole story takes place over just a couple of days. I'm doubting there will be a sequel although the final sequence left open the possibility. This is a very nicely-done horror film with good characterization and a somewhat understated style. It should appeal not just to horror film devotees but to a somewhat wider audience.

3 out of 5 stars Oops...not what I expected, but watched it anyway.   August 28, 2010

I was directed to this DVD from an external site. The external site led me to believe this was a DVD containing severel grizzly UFC fights. I was stoked to watch it, because I enjoy a great MMA fight.

When the DVD arrived, I was skeptical about what I had received, because there was no mention of any UFC fights on the cover.

Guess what? It had nothing to do with ufC. It was a horror film. My wife and I aren't into horror films so much, but we watched it anyway. Might as well, since we own it now, right?

Anyway, the movie was okay. Again, we aren't big fans of horror flicks. I have seen my fair share of horror flicks, and there are some greats out there. For what it's worth, this movie was okay. There were a couple good parts, but I've already forgotten that I even watched this movie 5 minutes later.

I trusted the external site and must have misinterpreted the message, so didn't scrutinize the description of the DVD when purchasing. In all honesty, I think it was a marketing tactic. I'm not a naive person, but I was led to believe this DVD was about UFC fighting. I learned a lesson. Always double check the product before purchasing, even if the source is trustworthy.

4 out of 5 stars How Does One Rate This Kind Of Film???   August 24, 2010

If you don't like zombie films, you'll find yourself sitting through this one, albeit sometimes reluctantly. It has all the modern setups of a classic zombie film, but includes enough plot and character development that you start to flip out any time someone is threatening the heroes - ANYONE. Those heroes would be the Sheriff and his doctor wife.

A flashback starts the film with the town being a burned out mess. It looks like Armageddon, so you know what to expect. The story then begins when things were normal. I won't spoil the rich plot, but it includes a scary beginning where the sheriff has to shoot someone at a public town game when he approaches everyone with a rifle. He is the first `crazie'. People start showing up at the doctor's office one after another, `not being themselves'. The weirdness escalates with other bizarre behavior; a man trying to burn down a house with his wife and child inside, hunters finding a government plane in the local pond, a theory of water contamination and hoards of more scary, grisly killings.

The military shows up and starts rounding up the crazies with the non-crazies, which is a real treat for these who are still sane. Some of the healthy are strapped down in gurneys as crazies approach, and well. It's pretty gory. Finally the crazies get out of control and the military screws up and everyone gets loose. It's a wild ride. There are some great scenes including some non-crazies being trapped in a car going through car wash (very clever) and a nifty car and helicopter chase scene to mix in with all the bloodshed. It does get to you after a while with the relentless carnage.

Of course, in all these disaster movies, the big question is who will survive? It must be the good sheriff and his doctor wife. Right? Well, some survive and others don't, like any good zombie movie - you just never know. The ending is classic as well. Like a clock, it literally ticks down to the last scene - and then some later on, if you can believe that.
